Information Visualization and Semiotic Morphisms
نویسنده
چکیده
Information visualization design is generally ad hoc, using trial and error, and perhaps drawing on experience with prior visualization systems. This paper suggests a di erent approach: general design principles based on a combination of algebraic abstract data type theory, semiotics, and social theory. Major concepts include semiotic spaces to describe systems of related signs, semiotic morphisms to describe representations of signs, and preservation measures to describe the quality of representations. Some examples are given, each with a critical discussion, illustrating how semiotic morphisms can help with design.

Approach to Semiotic Theory of Computer Visualization
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Semiotic approach to forming of Theory of Computer Visualization. Such theory (or rather theories) should be the foundation of design, development, and evaluations of specialized visualization systems. The semiotic analysis of visualization is defined. The paper contains the scheme of the semiotics analysis during designing of visualization systems. T...

Purpose: One of the most effective ways to achieve optimum information retrieval is through visualization of Information. Search strategies, probing skills, querying of information needs and analysis of information play a significant role in the accessing of necessary and useful information. Besides the factors mentioned above, information visualization can increase the availability level of in...

In this short essay, I consider some relationships between the integrated cognitive-semiotic approach to cartographic representation that I develop in How Maps Work and Jacques Bertin’s contributions to cartographic and graphic theory. I relate my approach to his comprehensive semiologic framework for map and graphic design as well as his efforts toward a structured method of graphic informatio...
